Students' Union

The Students' Union at the University of Nottingham is one of the most successful in the country, existing to improve the experience of student life by providing quality services, representation, and development for the students at the University.

1998-1999

Communications Committee
Although a separate position, I initially chose to stand for it as I was OCSA Communications Officer, and I felt it important to ensure a two-way dialogue between the communications strategy of the Students' Union and the OCSA. The make-up of Communications Committee was later changed to include the OCSA Communications Officer ex officio.

Students' Union Web Team
The fledgling Students' Union Web Team was set up as a sub-committee of the Communications Committee.

1999-2000

Students' Union Council (as OCSA Students' Union Rep)
Council is the highest decision-making body of the Students' Union. I had attended Council meetings as an observer the previous year (whilst OCSA Communications Officer) to ensure necessary information was communicated to my constituents. Following that I stood for the position of Students' Union Rep to further that aim.

Finance Committee
This body meets to discuss and direct the funding of the various areas of the Students' Union.

Education Committee
This Committee's remit includes all areas of educational issues. In recent years it has focused on Higher Education Funding as well as its more core aspects of Academic Representation.

Academic Forum
The Academic Forum was created to allow all the students who act as Course Representatives within the University to get together and discuss common issues. As a member of Elections Committee I was also involved in the organisation of the Forum.

Education Committee web master
I was appointed to this position on an ad hoc basis from within the Education Committee, and was responsible for updating the information provided on the Academic pages of the Students' Union's website.

2000-2001

Structure of Council Action Group
This group was created temporarily to ensure a smooth transition as the structure of Students' Union Council was radically overhauled to better represent and serve the students at the University of Nottingham.

Presidents' Committee
I sat on Presidents' Committee ex officio as the President of the OCSA. This allowed me a near unique perspective since nearly all of the other members of the Committee are Presidents of Halls of Residence on campus.

Broadgate Park Review Group
Another ad hoc group, set up to look at the development of Broadgate Park, one of the University's few self-catered Halls of Residence. I was invited to sit on this group to bring my experience in the accommodation arena, developed through OCSA, to bear on an interesting and different project.

2001-2002

General Secretary
During my final year at University I was elected by a cross-campus ballot to hold the full-time (paid) sabbatical office of General Secretary. This role includes being a Trustee of one of the largest students' unions in the country, with an annual budget of around one million pounds. My specific responsibilities include many of the Students' Union's communications channels and its democratic and representative structures.

Executive Committee
As General Secretary I sit on the Students' Union's Executive Committee. For my year in office we decided that it was sensible to maintain a consistent a minute-taker for the committee, and hence I played a key role in its administration.

Elections Committee
As General Secretary I was responsible for chairing Elections Committee, and being the Returning Officer in the Students' Union's two sets of cross-campus elections. The larger of these involved twenty-six candidates running for twelve positions, with over 3,600 voters. I trained volunteers and casual staff in various aspects of the running of the elections, and held ultimate responsibility for the fairness of the elections.

Constitutions Committee, later Drafting Committee
The name of this group was changed half-way through the year to better reflect the broad remit it has in ensuring all aspects of the Students' Union's Constitution, Regulations, and Policy File are clear, concise, and relevant. As General Secretary I chaired this committee.

Management Committee
This sub-committee of Executive Committee meets to decide upon staffing issues within the Students' Union. We considered topics as varied as the Students' Union's pension scheme, the remuneration of casual staff, and an overarching pay review of all permanent staff.

Board of Directors of UNU Services Limited
UNU Services Limited is a company wholly-owned by the Students' Union, which runs its bar and shops. The company has a turnover of around £4 million, and provides much of the funding of the Students' Union.

Off-Campus Students' Association (OCSA)

The OCSA is an Associated Body of the Students' Union, aimed at supporting those students living off-campus. My involvement in the OCSA was initially sparked because I lived off-campus in my first year. As I progressed I became interested in developing the OCSA to serve its full potential, working for all off-campus students, rather than just off-campus first years, without forgetting its roots. A full review I lead during my tenure as President resulted in the implementation of a structure that is already proving successful at achieving that.

1998-1999

Communications Officer
As Communication Officer I had a varied role including publicising events and parties, and creating a newsletter to create awareness of the Association amongst the off-campus students. I also help with the general running of the Association.

First Year Co-ordinator
I was one of five OCSA co-ordinators for the first year intake. My main role in this position was managing the housing weekend, when our team faced the challenge of finding housing for over one hundred first years who did not have accommodation on campus. I also organised social events (such as a 'Medieval Banquet') and acted in a welfare role during Week One.

First Year Working Group
This group met to discuss issues particularly affecting the first years living off-campus. One of its main roles was the planning of the Housing Event.

Week One Representative
Each area of the University that has first years (Halls, flats, off-campus) has a number of Week One Reps who look after their first years, as well as assisting with the general support and introduction provided to all new students. This role is particularly important and challenging off-campus since the first years are spread around a wide area, making settling in harder.

1999-2000

Students' Union Rep
The primary role of Students' Union Rep is often seen as sitting on Students' Union Council (see above). I felt it important to ensure that as well as representing the views of my constituents I should communicate back to them what their Students' Union was doing for them.

Webmaster (appointed ad hoc from OCSA Committee)
As an experienced member of the OCSA Committee who had dabbled with creating an OCSA website I was asked to continue maintaining and improving it.

2000-2001

President
As President I identified the development of the Association as a priority, whilst being careful to maintain the excellent 'day-to-day' support work in the process. A new structure was introduced that ensures the particularly vulnerable first years are still looked after, whilst increasing the effective remit of the organisation to work for all off-campus students, frequently behind the scenes.

2001-2002

Off-Campus Residents' Liaison Officer
The product of the overhaul of the Association that occurred the year before, this position created a specific contact between the students living off-campus and the wider community. I built on links I had gained informally as President to work closely with members of the permanent resident community and the City Council.

School of Physics and Astronomy

1997-1998

First Year Course Rep
An Academic Representative position.

Student / Staff Consultative Committee (SSCC)
The SSCC comprises all of the year reps and several members of School staff. It afforded student reps the opportunity to discuss their concerns and give suggestions to the staff.

1998-1999

Undergraduate Rep
This position is effectively the 'head' student rep. I was selected by and from the year reps to hold it, including attending the Undergraduate Committee for Science, to represent all physics students.

Chair, Student Rep Committee
As Undergraduate Rep I formed an ad hoc committee of the student reps within the school to ensure we could best present any issues at the SSCC. I gave some guidance to new student members of the SSCC on how to broach issues, and instigated discussions on what was 'best practice' for canvassing the views of constituents.

Common Room Working Group
When the school made available a space as a common room, we were invited to form a group to kit it out. I was one of three students who assessed needs / desires, researched other departmental common rooms across campus, and created a plan. This plan was presented to the head administrator in the school, approved and implemented.

Student / Staff Consultative Committee
(see above)

1999-2000

Teaching Committee
Following student rep requests, the School decided to allow two students to sit on its Teaching Committee, previously only open to academic staff. I was one of the first ever pair of students selected to fill this role.

Nottingham City Council Area 7 Committee
As a long-standing member of the OCSA Committee I felt that it was important to build better links with the wider community. Sitting on Area 7 Committee I met people from residents groups in areas close to popular student areas, and identified areas of agreement.

Dunkirk and Lenton Partnership Forum Executive Committee (2000-2001, 2001-2002)
The Partnership Forum area coincides with much of the accommodation of off-campus students from the University of Nottingham. Having attended several public meetings I was co-opted onto the Executive Committee to represent student opinion, and stood for election the following year.

Sport

Swimming
For a long time I was involved in 'Lifesaving', the competitive version of lifeguarding. I represented the South East Region in the Royal Lifesaving Society National Competition as a schoolboy, and my University as a member of the A team. Following a break of about two years, I have recently started swimming again, and intend to join a lifesaving club once I have regained 'swim-fitness'.
